Tip
What ENERGY STAR labels actually mean
Refrigerators
Modern ENERGY STAR refrigerators use 9-15% less energy than non-certified models. The biggest energy gap isn't ENERGY STAR vs not — it's between a 1995 fridge and any 2020+ fridge. If your fridge is older than 15 years, replacement ROI is 3-5 years.
Dishwashers
ENERGY STAR dishwashers use less than half the water of a non-certified model and ~12% less energy. Run full loads and skip the heated dry — air-dry mode saves 15-50% on the cycle.
Clothes washers
ENERGY STAR washers use 25% less energy and 45% less water. Front-loaders are most efficient but require maintenance (gasket cleaning) to avoid mold. High-efficiency top-loaders close most of the gap with less hassle.
Clothes dryers
Heat pump dryers (ENERGY STAR Most Efficient) use 28-40% less energy than electric resistance dryers. They're slower (60-90 min vs 40-50 min cycle) but qualify for the IRA HEAR rebate up to $840.
Stovetops & ovens
Induction cooktops are ~85% efficient vs 75% for electric resistance and 40% for gas. They qualify for the IRA HEAR rebate up to $840 (income-eligible). Faster boil times are the side benefit.
