Seasonal Tips

Quarterly checklists for cutting energy use in spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Tip

Quarterly checklist

Spring (March-May)

  • HVAC tune-up (AC service before heat hits)
  • Replace filter
  • Inspect AC outdoor unit — clear leaves, debris, vegetation within 2 ft
  • Check attic insulation depth
  • Switch ceiling fans to counter-clockwise (cooling)
  • Service refrigerator coils (vacuum behind/below)

Summer (June-August)

  • Close blinds/curtains during peak sun on south/west exposure
  • Run dishwashers and laundry after 8 PM (off-peak in time-of-use rate plans)
  • Set thermostat 78°F daytime, allow 4-7°F setup overnight (rather than setback)
  • Check window AC unit weatherstripping

Fall (September-November)

  • HVAC tune-up (furnace before cold)
  • Replace filter
  • Switch ceiling fans clockwise on low (push warm air down)
  • Caulk window perimeters and door frames
  • Replace door weatherstripping if compressed
  • Drain and shut off exterior faucets
  • Reverse direction of attic vents if applicable

Winter (December-February)

  • Set thermostat 68°F daytime, 60-62°F overnight
  • Open south-facing blinds during the day (passive solar gain)
  • Close fireplace damper when not in use
  • Run bath fans only during/right after showers (don't leave running)
  • Check carbon monoxide detector
