Summer Survival

Beating heat without driving up the AC bill.

Tip

Beat heat without driving up the AC bill

Block solar gain

  • Close blinds/curtains on south and west exposure during peak sun (12-6 PM)
  • Use thermal-backed curtains in bedrooms (cuts solar heat gain by 25-40%)
  • Plant deciduous trees on south/west sides (long-term — but transformative)
  • Cool roofing or radiant attic barrier (longer-term capital project)

Manage internal heat

  • Run dishwasher and laundry after 8 PM (off-peak in time-of-use plans + avoids midday heat)
  • Cook outdoors when possible (grill, smoker, induction cooktop on patio)
  • Switch to LEDs everywhere (5-10x less heat output than incandescents)
  • Unplug rarely-used electronics (every appliance produces some heat)

Optimize AC

  • Set thermostat 78°F daytime, 76°F sleeping
  • Allow 4-7°F setup during away periods
  • Keep doors and windows closed during AC operation
  • Run ceiling fans counter-clockwise (cooling breeze, not actual cooling)
  • Replace AC filter monthly during heaviest use

Whole-house and attic fans

If overnight low temps drop below 70°F, a whole-house fan moves cool night air through the home and exhausts hot daytime air through attic vents. Operating cost is 1/10 of AC. Install with a tight-fitting damper (otherwise winter heat losses negate savings).
